Canon IXUS 180 Review

Canon IXUS 180 - overview

Recently launched alongside the new IXUS 285 HS and 175 models, the Canon IXUS 180 is Canon’s one of the super-slim and stylish point-and-shoot cameras in IXUS line-up. Of three, Canon IXUS 285 HS is the only camera with full-HD video recording and retails for INR 12995.

The 180 model costs Rs. 7995 and has been shipped with slightly lower zoom levels at 10x, while the IXUS 175 comes for Rs. 6995. Coming back to IXUS 180, it is a cool looking compact digital camera that comes with simple and uncomplicated functions compared to DSLRs.

There’s nothing special about the IXUS 180, still this common digital camera offers some exceptional features for the price tag it comes for. It has been included with a 20 megapixel sensor and a 24mm wide angle lens, 10x optical zoom lens which is expandable up to 20-fold zoom using the Zoom Plus functionality.

It further includes DIGIC 4+ processor combined with optical image stabilization that facilitates in delivering sharp images. Canon has also included NFC and Wi-Fi connectivity options in its IXUS 180 camera. Users can also operate the camera remotely with the connected smartphone.

Engineered for people keen on trying their hands on photography, the Canon IXUS 180 comes with Intelligent IS and Smart Auto functions making it easy for the users to select correct camera settings depending on the environment and situation

Canon IXUS 180 - Design

Compact, slim and stylish, Canon’s IXUS 180 is a perfect partner for the people on the move. Designed to adapt to any shooting situation, IXUS 180 can easily slide into a pants or shirt pocket. It measures around 5.7 x 9.5 x 2.4 cm in dimensions, and is feather-light at 132 grams. The Canon IXUS 180 is mostly made using plastic, and unit we had came in red glossy plastic casing, and offered a shininess that made it look more stylish and chic. It can also be availed in black and blue color variants.

Thanks to its small size, it fits well in hand making the function buttons easily accessible. It comes with a 2.7-inch LCD screen, which is quite bright and offers easy viewing. The menus are easy to read and navigate on the screen. Canon has made sure to mark the function buttons accessible, making them visible and easy to use.

Encased in plastic casing, IXUS 180 has been well screwed together and doesn’t flex. It has a metal tripod which seems like a nice treat, though not all make use of it when it comes to point-and-shoot cameras.

Canon IXUS 180 - Display

The 2.7-inch LCD screen are some good-sized functions buttons that are easily operated. It has the usual playback, video recording and menu controls. You can also find a 4-way directional dial, and within this is the Func/Set button.

This is the gateway to the IXUS 180’s main shooting options and has been separated from the lesser-used settings available in the main menu. Then there are buttons to access Information Settings, Auto Zoom, Image Delete, Auto mode and Flash. At the bottom, you can see a Wi-Fi button access to Wi-Fi functions. The shutter button and the zoom controls are placed at the top and are easy to operate.

Further, the IXUS 180 ships with an 8GB Sandisk SD card and a soft pouch. Inserting a battery and SD card might get bit confusing for the first time as there is no such indication that mentions the sides.

Canon has again opted to hide away most of the creative effects and shooting modes in the Func/Set menu, where other similar cameras provide a dedicated mode button.  A flexible 24mm ultra-wide 10x optical zoom lens with 20x ZoomPlus can be found on the front with built in optical image stabilization for taking steadier shots when shooting handheld or at the time of using the optical zoom. Overall, the camera is pretty and basic but has been neatly done. The IXUS 180 uses Canon’s tried and tested menu design, which is quite and simple and easy to use.

When it’s time to indulge in clicks, the IXUS 180 powers up within a second and fires a shot in a spritely 1.6seconds. Combined with a 20 megapixel CCD sensor and DIGIC4+ image processor, the IXUS 180 delivers some decent images in low light conditions, but at times you might need to turn on the flash in dark surroundings to make the things visible.

Low light shots doesn’t impress much, and despite DIGIC4+ image processor added, the camera will need flash to at least make images shot in low light look good. Pictures shot outdoors are neat and doesn’t have much noises. The IXUS 180 does a good job at keeping the details and delivering clear images, especially during daylight.

Macro shots can be clicked with the subject just few centimeters away from the lens. Focusing seemed accurate most of the time but might get bit annoying when taking a close-up shot. The IXUS 180 seems to struggle a bit before focusing, when trying to shoot a close-up.  Further, make sure to use Auto Mode, this helps in choosing the perfect camera settings automatically for any scene.
