Why And How to Move From Blogger To WordPress. A Thorough Guide

blogger to wordpress

So you’ve been blogging using Blogger.com and have finally decided to move over to WordPress to enjoy all its benefits? Lucky for you, migrating from blogger to WordPress has been made easy. You can now move without losing your posts and pages or even your page rank. Blogger as we all know is Google’s baby blogging platform, free and easy to make use of but has a limited functionality, yet the best option for newbie bloggers. If you are new to blogging, I advise you to keep growing with Blogger until you have fully mastered all the pros and cons on the blog business.

Why move to WordPress?

There are several reasons why you may be thinking of moving over to WordPress, I believe whatever reason you have, you are absolutely right! WordPress is one of the most powerful and yet the most popular CMS (Content Management System) out there. No wonder it is loved by almost every webmaster and pro-Bloggers worldwide. I think that is one of the reasons you are planning of joining the moving train. I am pleased to bet you; that is not even enough reason to move to WordPress. I will be showing you reasons why WordPress is worth giving a try.

Well, to shorten the long story, here are some reasons I know you should migrate to WordPress:

1. You want to be in charge

If you are using a free blogging platform like blogger.com or even WordPress.com, you are using someone else’s tool hosted on someone else’s server. For instance, if you make use of blogger, yourBlog.blogspot.com is owned by Blogger, hosted on Google’s server though the sub domain was assigned to you, you have just a limited control over it. Your blog, when using Blogger for instance is being monitored by Google, if at any time you violate Google’s Blogger terms of use, they have every power to suspend or even delete your blog permanently and you loose everything. If they (Google) decide any day on their own that you are violating their policy and terms, they will not even notify you before taking any action.

WordPress on the other hand doesn’t work that way. Here you are the BOSS who is in charge of everything. You have the power to put your blog in any way you like, do whatever you like without having the fear of violating any terms of service or the fear of having your blog removed from server.

2. You need freedom of design

To be honest, it is not in any way easy to design a blogger template of your own except for tweaking an already existing blogger template. Speaking from a web designers’ perspective, WordPress is one CMS which has five times customizable theme design than others including Blogger. You can easily convert HTML & CSS based template into a WordPress theme to get the look and feel you ever wanted. Though there are custom blogger templates on the template store but just few are customizable unless you are ready to play around with code! Sorry if you have no basic web coding background -you could mess up the whole template and loose the design.

3. You want more functionality

If it is blogger, then it’s for blogging purpose only. Nothing more. With WordPress, thousands of plug-in are available to turn your site to any kind and add more functions that CMSs don’t initially have

With the power of plugins, you can add an e-commerce function to your blog to make it possible to sell physical and digital products and services while you still maintain your regular blog, or even turn your blog into a social network sites like Facebook and linkedin.

With pluing, WordPress let you create anykind of web site Rader than just blogs. There are torns of plugins which can be fornd on WordPress plugin directory that will surely take your blog to the next level. Some of then which I recommend to every blogger include:

  • OptinMonster:- Optinmonster allows you to convert your abandoning website visitors into email subscribers to grow your email list.
  •  MonsterInsight:- Monsterinsight alows you connect with Google analytics to find out more about your website visitors, where your traffic is coming from and what they do on your website.
  •  YoastSEO:- Yoast SEO allows you optimize your website for search engines.
  •  Akismet:- Akismet frequently scan your blog comments for spam and let you review them.

4. You need a better Search Engine Optimization

Blogger uses one long page that contains all the HTML & CSS which controls every page and layout design of the whole blog which does not only reduce the page load time but also result to poor SEO even though it is managed by Google itself.

WordPress happens to be the best when it comes to SEO. All its plugins responsible for Search Engine Optimization are all superb. You can easily move to the first page of search results with these simple plugins:

Moving from blogger to WordPress

Have known some of the benefits of WordPress over blogger, it’s high time to tell yourself if you are moving over to WordPress or better still continuing with blogger. The decision is absolutely yours to make –I personally love Blogger and I am satisfied with what I get. Though I have been working with WordPress.

To migrate to WordPress, Kindly follow my step-by-step instruction;

1. Get a domain name idea

Your domain name will be your online identity. The identity of this blog you are reading is Techgetto.com

Find a domain name that ideally describe your blog niche, if your blog talks about “Blogging” for instance, consider getting a domain name that looks like BlogTrick.com. it will really help in SEO ranking.

2. Buy a hosting plan

Although WordPress is free for use, you will still have to pay your hosting company for bringing your blog live on the internet.

Search for web hosting companies that support WordPress script installation. Almost all of them do. But having been in the field, I have found out that godaddy ang bluehost happens to be the best world wide while whogohost and garanntor seems to top the Nigerian hosting Companies to support WordPress installation.

3. Install WordPress on your web host server

After you’ve gotten a domain name and a hosting account, its now time to run WordPress installation.

Some web hosting companies offer one-time WordPress installation which let you follow their step-by-step installation wizard while others let you manually install WordPress. Later on this blog, I will show you how to install WordPress.

4. Backup and export your blogger posts and comments

Before you can import your blogger posts and comments in wordress, you will first of all backup and export your contents to your hard drive which you will later upload to WordPress.

  •  Login to your blogger dashboard
  • Choose the blog you want to export
  • On the left side of your screen, click settings => others.
  • On the “import and backup” section, click backup content => save to your computer.

DONE!

5. Import blogger to WordPress

Next is to import you blooger contents to WordPress.

  •  Login to your WordPress dashboard (yourdomain.com/wp-admin)
  • On the left panel, click TOOL => IMPORT and a pop up will appear asking you to install blogger to WordPress importer plugin.
  • Click on install. After installing and activating the plugin, continue by running it. WordPress will ask you to upload an xml file, just select the previous exported blogger content and upload.

6. Set up redirections

Here is the most important part of everything. You need to redirect all your blogger traffic to your new WordPress blog. To do so,

  •  login to your blogger dashboard
  • click on theme and scroll down
  • select reverse to classic template
  • select html and replace every code within the box with the code below. Make sure you replace http://example.com to your WordPress domain name.

 <html>
  <head>
  <title><$BlogPageTitle$></title>

   <script>
   <MainOrArchivePage>
   window.location.href="http://example.com/"
   </MainOrArchivePage>
   <Blogger>
    <ItemPage>
    window.location.href="http://example.com/?blogger=<$BlogItemPermalinkURL$>"
    </ItemPage>
   </Blogger>
   </script>

   <MainPage>
   <link rel="canonical" href="http://example.com/" />
   </MainPage>

   <Blogger>
   <ItemPage>
   <link rel="canonical" href="http://example.com/?blogger=<$BlogItemPermalinkURL$>" />
   </ItemPage>
   </Blogger>
  </head>

  <body>
  <MainOrArchivePage>
   <h1><a href="http://example.com/"><$BlogTitle$></a></h1>
  </MainOrArchivePage>
  <Blogger>
   <ItemPage>
   <h1><a href="http://example.com/?blogger=<$BlogItemPermalinkURL$>"><$BlogItemTitle$></a></h1>
   <$BlogItemBody$>
   </ItemPage>
  </Blogger>
  </body>
 </html>

Save your template and you are done.

Next step is setting up a 301 redirects which ensures that any one visiting a particular post on your old blogger blog will be directed to the same post on your new WordPress blog. To make this possible, you need to add some code to the function.php file.

Copy the following code to function.php

 function blogger_query_vars_filter( $vars ) {
  $vars[] = "blogger";
  return $vars;
 }

 add_filter('query_vars', 'blogger_query_vars_filter');

 function blogger_template_redirect() {
  global $wp_query;
  $blogger = $wp_query->query_vars['blogger'];
  if ( isset ( $blogger ) ) {
   wp_redirect( get_wordpress_url ( $blogger ) , 301 );
   exit;
  }
 }

 add_action( 'template_redirect', 'blogger_template_redirect' );

 function get_wordpress_url($blogger) {
  if ( preg_match('@^(?:https?://)?([^/]+)(.*)@i', $blogger, $url_parts) ) {
   $query = new WP_Query (
    array ( "meta_key" => "blogger_permalink", "meta_value" => $url_parts[2] ) );
   if ($query->have_posts()) {
    $query->the_post();
    $url = get_permalink();
   }
   wp_reset_postdata();
  }
  return $url ? $url : home_url();
 }
